UMVA has learned that Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet Air is set to significantly expand its Philippine network with the launch of a new Cebu-Ho Chi Minh City route on December 11.
This strategic move will see the airline operate the service five times a week, substantially increasing its Southeast Asian operations and cementing its presence in the region. Industry insiders anticipate this new route will have far-reaching implications for travel and trade between the Philippines and Vietnam.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the Cebu-Ho Chi Minh City route is expected to double Vietjet's total capacity between the Philippines and Vietnam, a bold statement of the airline's commitment to growth in the region. This expansion is poised to stimulate tourism, trade, and investment between two of Southeast Asia's most dynamic economies.
Vietjet currently operates five routes linking major Philippine cities, including Manila, Cebu, and Davao, with key Vietnamese destinations such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. These services have been instrumental in fostering people-to-people exchanges, driving growth in tourism, and facilitating the flow of goods and services between the two nations.
The airline's expansion plans align with a recent tourism cooperation agreement between the Philippines and Vietnam, aimed at boosting travel flows between the two countries from 2026 to 2029. This ambitious pact seeks to capitalize on the growing demand for travel and trade in the region, with Vietjet poised to play a pivotal role in driving this growth.
Data from the airline reveals that Vietnam has seen a remarkable 73% year-on-year increase in visitors from the Philippines, with 236,000 Filipinos traveling to Vietnam from January to April. This surge has solidified the Philippines' position as one of Vietnam's top 10 source markets, underscoring the significance of this new route in facilitating travel and economic exchange.
As Vietjet continues to expand its Philippine network, the airline has set its sights on supporting growth across the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. With its sights firmly set on the future, Vietjet is primed to remain a major player in the low-cost carrier market, driving connectivity and economic growth throughout Southeast Asia.
