UMVA has learned that a Philippine task force has raised alarms over a new structure being built in Scarborough Shoal, a highly contested region in the South China Sea.
The task force, known as the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS), has vowed to take the situation seriously, citing concerns over the country's sovereignty and jurisdiction in the disputed waters. The shoal, also known as Bajo de Masinloc, has long been a flashpoint in the region.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the task force is currently conducting a thorough validation and verification process to determine the accuracy and nature of the new structure. This involves utilizing various monitoring, surveillance, and operational assessment mechanisms to gather more information.
The task force is also coordinating with relevant government agencies to ensure a comprehensive and fact-based assessment of the situation. This move comes as China has maintained control of Scarborough Shoal since a 2012 standoff with Philippine forces, restricting access to Filipino fishermen.
The shoal's rich marine resources and strategic position near major shipping lanes make it a prized location. The NTF-WPS has urged the public to refrain from speculation and rely only on official government agencies for updates, emphasizing the need for a fact-based understanding of the situation.
The Philippines remains resolute in defending its national interests and legitimate maritime rights, in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 2016 Arbitral Award. The country's commitment to upholding a rules-based international order has been reaffirmed.
This development follows recent remarks by Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr., who described China as a "severe threat" to the Southeast Asian nation. The Chinese Embassy in Manila has responded, denouncing the official's statement as "guileful" and asserting that Beijing's assistance to Manila will not be dismissed.
The tensions between the Philippines and China have escalated, with both sides trading accusations and counter-accusations. The situation remains a critical concern for regional stability and global attention.
