A wave of fear gripped Toronto following a brazen act of violence at Fairview Mall, where a security guard was shot during a jewelry store robbery. Authorities are urgently seeking Kyle Douglas Prouse, a 53-year-old career criminal, in connection with the shooting and a string of escalating crimes.
The incident unfolded on April 21st, when Prouse allegedly opened fire after being confronted by a security team member. The guard, discovered in a stairwell, sustained serious injuries but is expected to make a full recovery. Prouse escaped with stolen jewelry, initially fleeing in a white van.
Investigators quickly tracked the abandoned van to the Shaughnessy Blvd. and George Henry Blvd. area, discovering Prouse had transferred to a black Honda Accord to continue his escape. This swift change of vehicles highlights a calculated attempt to evade capture.
Police have now announced an enhanced reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to Prouse’s arrest, recognizing the urgency and severity of his actions. Inspector Kristy Smith emphasized the senselessness of the violence, stating the victim was attacked simply for performing his duty.
This isn’t an isolated incident. Prouse is linked to a series of robberies and break-ins stretching back to 2023, targeting banks and jewelry stores across Ontario and Quebec. His criminal history reveals a pattern of escalating danger and disregard for human life.
The list of alleged crimes includes robberies at Yorkdale Mall in September 2023, Scarborough Town Centre in March 2024, and a similar incident in Brossard, Quebec, in May 2025. More recently, he’s suspected in robberies in January and March of 2026, and another bank robbery just weeks before the Fairview Mall shooting.
Originally from British Columbia, Prouse’s criminal record extends back to at least 1999, indicating a long-standing pattern of unlawful behavior. Durham Police have also issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with a 2023 break-and-enter case.
Toronto Crime Stoppers Chair Sean Sportun described the shooting as “senseless,” underscoring the community’s outrage and desire for justice. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding Prouse’s whereabouts to come forward immediately.
Those with information are encouraged to contact police directly or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Every detail, no matter how small, could be crucial in bringing this dangerous individual to justice and preventing further harm.
