UMVA has learned that Offshore Music, a pioneering independent record label, is marking a major milestone – its 10th anniversary – with a captivating five-part documentary series that takes fans on a journey through its remarkable history.
Founded by Ely Buendia, the former frontman of the iconic Eraserheads, Offshore Music was built on a bold "artist-first philosophy," a commitment to creative authenticity, and a passion for nurturing artist communities. Today, the label boasts an impressive roster of over 30 artists and has partnered with Sony Music Entertainment for global distribution and promotion.
The documentary series, featuring a treasure trove of archival footage, candid interviews, and behind-the-scenes storytelling, chronicles Offshore Music's path from humble beginnings to its current success. From "winging it" to near-bankruptcy, the label's story is one of perseverance and dedication to its artistic vision.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the docuseries will premiere on May 31 on Offshore Music's YouTube channel, with subsequent episodes dropping monthly until September. The five episodes – "One Vision, One Product," "Championing Artist Growth," "Board Member Reflections," "Artist Stories," and "The Epilogue" – promise to offer a fascinating glimpse into the music industry, tackling topics such as music production, vinyl culture, branding, and artist development.
Mr. Buendia envisions the documentary series as a valuable resource for both fans and aspiring artists, offering a unique perspective on the inner workings of a record label. "It's really for the layman who knows nothing about the music industry or is just curious about it," he said. "Maybe we can educate them on what goes on behind a record label."
Offshore Music's approach to artist development is characterized by a willingness to give its artists creative freedom, allowing them to pursue their passions without constraint. "We let them do whatever they want," said Pat Sarabia, A&R director of Offshore Music. "We don't just shut down their ideas just because it's not trending."
The label's commitment to artistic authenticity extends to its stance on artificial intelligence (AI)-produced music. Mr. Buendia drew a hard line against supporting AI-produced music, stating, "For me, the novelty is wearing out. We've heard what AI can do with music, and I draw the line with AI-produced music."
As Offshore Music celebrates its 10th anniversary, fans can look forward to a range of exciting activities, including the second vinyl re-pressing of the Eraserheads' album Ultraelectromagneticpop! and the highly anticipated vinyl release of the Eraserheads' Christmas album Fruitcake.
Under the guidance of General Manager Audry Dionisio, Offshore Music has adapted to the shifting music landscape, embracing social media and leveraging the creativity of its team to stay ahead of the curve. "It's a learning opportunity every day," she said. "We learn a lot from our team, because they're the ones who are chronically online."
