The controversy stems from a 2021 interview where Talarico accused the state’s governor of prioritizing baseless fears about transgender athletes. He specifically claimed that concerns about competitive imbalances were unfounded within Texas, dismissing them alongside objections to critical race theory in schools.
Talarico’s record reveals consistent opposition to legislation aimed at protecting competitive equity in sports. He voted against bills prohibiting biological males from participating in both K-12 and collegiate women’s sports, measures that ultimately became law in Texas.
