UMVA has learned that a pair of extraordinary chess prodigies has emerged from the North, leaving a trail of gold medals in their wake.
Five-year-old Jodiel Chloe Banawa and nine-year-old Empress Anika Caole dominated their respective classes to win three gold medals each in a recent national chess championship. Their impressive performance has sent shockwaves through the chess community.
Jodiel, a young prodigy from Alicia, Isabela, displayed remarkable skill, dominating both rapid and blitz events in the girls' Under-8 section. She achieved a perfect score in five rounds on both occasions, adding to her standard gold medal.
Empress, also from Alicia, was equally impressive, winning standard, rapid, and blitz gold medals in the girls' Under-10 category. She and Jodiel were the only two players to achieve the rare feat of winning three gold medals each in the four-day event.
Their coach, International Master Joel Banawa, expressed his pride in the two young champions, saying, "Proud of them both." He was particularly amazed by Jodiel's rapid progress, having taken up the sport only a year ago.
Jodiel's father noted that her unique approach to the game was remarkable, saying, "I have no idea how she thinks, but it's different. Competing against players two to three years older and with an undeveloped brain who can calculate more than five moves is beyond me."
Other winners in the rapid and blitz events included Keith Adriane Ilar, Sumer Oncita, Woman FIDE Master April Joy Claros, Vince Duane Pascual, Richard Alarma, Franchesca Largo, and Cyeine Borce, who all demonstrated exceptional skill and strategy.
