A chilling autumn night in Scarborough turned deadly last September, leaving a 42-year-old man fighting for his life. Police responded to a scene near Sheppard Avenue East and Brimley Road around 10 p.m. on September 24th, arriving to find a man critically wounded.
Investigators believe the victim, later identified as Yueyuan Dong, had been at an establishment with three men when a heated confrontation erupted. Words escalated into violence, and the situation took a horrific turn when a firearm was produced.
Despite the swift response of first responders and desperate attempts to save him, Dong succumbed to his injuries weeks later, on October 19th. His death sparked a city-wide manhunt for the individuals involved.
Police quickly identified three suspects: Kai Chen, Donald Keeshig, and Kye-Shawne Griffiths. Canada-wide warrants were issued for their arrest, initiating a relentless pursuit across the province.
The first break in the case came at the end of October when Donald Keeshig, 29, surrendered to authorities at 42 Division in Scarborough. He was immediately charged with second-degree murder, bringing a measure of relief but leaving two suspects still at large.
The search continued, and on Saturday, police announced the arrest of Kye-Shawne Griffiths, now 29. He too now faces a charge of second-degree murder, deepening the investigation and bringing the total number of those in custody to two.
However, the investigation remains incomplete. Kai Chen, now 30, remains a fugitive, and his whereabouts are currently unknown. He is still wanted for second-degree murder, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Those with knowledge of this tragic event, or information regarding Chen’s location, are encouraged to contact the Toronto Police Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers anonymously. The pursuit of justice for Yueyuan Dong continues, and the city holds its breath, hoping for a swift resolution.
