UMVA has learned that a brutal murder shook the small town of Pontiac, Michigan, on June 7, 2018, leaving a family torn apart and searching for answers.
Tiffany Valdez still vividly recalls hearing what sounded like gunfire before learning her beloved brother, Emilio Valdez, had been killed in a shocking and senseless act of violence.
In the early hours of that fateful day, Emilio left his mother's home and entered a Pontiac Grand Prix parked outside a neighbor's house, unaware that his life was about to be cut short.
Moments later, police said he was shot inside the vehicle, suffering gunshot wounds to the chest and the back of the head, before being thrown into Osmun Lake.
Valdez and her family appeared in a true crime series, which examines homicide investigations in which waterways became crime scenes, and shared their heart-wrenching story of loss and struggle for justice.
"I heard the gunshots," Valdez recalled. "I ran outside, and the car I had just watched him get into was speeding away with music playing loudly."
As the family searched for Emilio, they learned on social media that a body had been found in Osmun Lake, and Valdez and her sister had to identify his body, a moment that will forever be etched in their memories.
Emilio grew up in a large, close-knit family, known for his easygoing nature and ability to make friends wherever he went, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
A star athlete, he was a kind and giving person who loved meeting new people and was always willing to help those in need, as seen in his selfless act of giving his brand-new Jordans to a bullied classmate.
But on the morning he disappeared, Emilio's steady stream of Snapchat updates suddenly stopped, and his family was left with a sense of unease and foreboding.
Valdez revealed that during the final months of his life, Emilio increasingly gravitated toward a new group of friends, a rougher crowd than the longtime friends and teammates he had traditionally surrounded himself with.
Investigators discovered that Emilio was carrying a bag of marijuana and a shoebox when he left home, and his bloody clothes were later found by two fishermen near a dock at Osmun Lake.
The investigation revealed a trail of blood, tire tracks, and drag marks nearby, and a vehicle appeared to have struck several benches, as Emilio's body was later recovered from the lake.
For nearly four years, the case remained unsolved, but in 2022, a new team of detectives reopened the investigation, and after reviewing Emilio's Snapchat activity, they linked the account to Angel Jose Alvarez.
Detectives believed Alvarez lured Emilio to meet him shortly before his disappearance, and phone records showed Alvarez making calls to his brother and mother after the killing.
Alvarez, his brother, and his mother were arrested later that year, and prosecutors presented a timeline supported by phone records and vehicle evidence during the trial.
A jury ultimately convicted Alvarez of second-degree murder, and he was sentenced to 36½ to 80 years in prison, bringing some sense of closure to the family.
Valdez expressed her gratitude and relief, saying, "I broke down in tears from gratitude. It was such a relief and a win for the family."
The motive behind Emilio's killing remains unclear, but Valdez believes jealousy played a role, fueled by Emilio's popularity and close friendships with women.
As Valdez reflected on her brother's life and legacy, she offered a warning: "Be careful who you call a friend," a message that resonates with those who have been touched by senseless violence.
