A wave of police and specially trained dogs descended upon the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, triggered by the discovery of a potentially suspicious bag.
The scene unfolded during a performance by comedian Peter Kay, yet remarkably, a sense of calm prevailed amongst the audience, according to one attendee.
Authorities swiftly moved to secure the arena as a precaution, initiating a thorough search of the premises. A 19-year-old man is now in police custody as the investigation unfolds.
Witness Steve Aspinall, who was enjoying the show with his wife, described a sudden, hushed exchange. Two individuals approached the stage, one with a microphone and headphones, and quietly spoke with Kay before both abruptly left the stage area.
The audience was then instructed to be vigilant, to locate security personnel, and to listen carefully for further announcements. Aspinall initially believed the disruption was a planned part of the performance.
“It was a strange atmosphere, eerie, just confused really about what was happening,” he recounted. Despite the uncertainty, a sense of orderliness prevailed, and the crowd dispersed without panic.
Miranda Richardson, a pub landlady from Northampton, emphasized the speed and efficiency of the evacuation. Staff swiftly directed attendees to exit the arena, explaining the situation as an unforeseen circumstance.
Word spread quickly that a bag had been reported as left unattended. Richardson noted the lack of chaos, describing a smooth and orderly departure orchestrated by the venue staff.
Officials from the National Exhibition Centre, which manages the arena, confirmed the evacuation was a precautionary measure taken on the advice of the police.
Those who purchased tickets for the event are being contacted directly with updates regarding the situation and potential rescheduling. The venue remains secured as the investigation continues.
