President Trump announced Grenell’s transition, naming Matt Floca, currently the center’s vice president of facilities operations, as the incoming chief operating officer and executive director. Trump expressed his confidence in Floca, highlighting the progress already made under his leadership as Vice President of Operations. He envisions a future where the center achieves “the highest level of Excellence!” and anticipates a grand re-opening in approximately two years following a complete reconstruction.
Grenell’s appointment in early 2025 was a bold move, signaling Trump’s intent to overhaul the Kennedy Center’s leadership and steer it towards a new direction. He revealed the Kennedy Center was operating with “zero cash on hand” and “zero in reserves,” burdened by a mounting crisis of deferred maintenance. The financial concerns deepened with the discovery of $26 million in questionable revenue, which Grenell labeled “phantom revenue” or “fake revenue.” This finding was subsequently referred to the U.S. attorney’s office, suggesting potential irregularities in the center’s financial practices.
