UMVA has learned that a devastating double shooting at a Vaughan nightclub in 2022 has resulted in a life sentence for the perpetrator, Kensworth Alton Francis, 31, of Mississauga.
Francis was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no chance at parole for 25 years, a harsh punishment for a crime that shook the community. The sentencing came after a jury trial that found Francis guilty of the heinous crime.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the tragic events unfolded on July 23, 2022, at about 3:30 a.m., when officers responded to the ATL Lounge on Hwy. 7 and found three victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Two of the victims, Tosin Amos-Arowoshegebe, 25, and Chibueze Momah, 22, succumbed to their injuries, while a 20-year-old woman was also injured but survived.
The investigation into the double murder was a complex and challenging one, with York Regional Police homicide unit members partnering with the BOLO Program, the RCMP Interpol Fugitive Apprehension Support Team, and the U.S. Marshals Service to track down Francis, who was wanted on a nationwide warrant.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Francis was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Hartford, Conn., on March 26, 2024, and investigators worked with the Ministry of the Attorney General to extradite him to York Region. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
In addition to the life sentences for first-degree murder, Francis was also sentenced to eight years in prison for unlawfully causing bodily harm, with all sentences to be served concurrently. The sentencing brings a measure of closure to a painful chapter for the families of the victims and the community at large.
