Iowa Democrat Who Emphasized Strong Work Ethic Misses Over Half of House Votes

Lindsay James, a member of the Iowa House of Representatives and Democratic candidate for the state’s congressional seat, missed more than half of the legislative votes recorded in 2026.

Official records show she was absent for 177 of 342 votes, representing a 51.7% absentee rate.

The high absence rate contradicts assurances she gave that her congressional campaign would not interfere with her duties as a state legislator.

Opponents argue that her pattern of missed votes indicates a preference for personal political advancement over representing her constituents.

James’s campaign highlights her legislative work, citing initiatives such as a bill to cap insulin costs and efforts to address corporate and housing issues affecting Iowa families.

On April 20, she missed a vote on a bill to limit screen time for students in order to attend a campaign event in Cedar Rapids, approximately two hours from the state capital.

Ten days later, she was absent for a vote on criminalizing animal cruelty, opting instead to host a meet‑and‑greet at a brewery in Decorah.

She also skipped a vote on lowering property taxes to participate in a candidate activity in Dubuque, a three‑hour drive from Des Moines.

James secured the Democratic nomination earlier this month and is now campaigning for the congressional seat currently held by Rep. Ashley Hinson, who is pursuing a Senate race.

The situation underscores the tension between campaign responsibilities and legislative obligations as the race progresses toward the general election.
