This ambition centers on those who arrived during the peak of the Syrian civil war in 2015 and 2016, a period when Germany, under former Chancellor Angela Merkel, opened its borders to a significant influx of migrants. Approximately 1.23 million people of Syrian origin now call Germany home.
However, the plan isn’t a blanket directive. Merz acknowledged that certain skilled professionals – doctors and nurses, for example – might be granted exceptions and allowed to remain in Germany, recognizing their value to the nation’s workforce. The focus, however, remains on facilitating a widespread return.
Merz emphasized that the conclusion of the civil war has created a “perspective for returning to Syria,” and his government intends to actively support this process. This includes seeking cooperation from Syrian authorities, particularly in cases involving individuals without a clear legal basis for remaining in Germany.
Beyond easing migration pressures, the German government views this initiative as a means of contributing to the reconstruction of Syria following the fall of the Assad regime. The plan suggests a desire to play a role in stabilizing the region and fostering long-term recovery.
