UMVA has learned that a critical motion to expedite the Trump-backed congressional redistricting effort in South Carolina has been killed by the state Senate, putting the entire push for a bold 7-0 Republican map in serious jeopardy.
The motion, which would have suspended Rule 15b to allow immediate cloture, failed to meet the required 2/3 threshold with a 25-15 vote. Six Republican senators joined forces with Democrats to block the motion, effectively handing a temporary win to those opposed to the redistricting effort.
State Rep. Adam Morgan blasted the vote, sounding the alarm that this development puts the entire effort in serious jeopardy. He identified the six Republican senators who voted with Democrats to kill the motion as Rex Rice, Shane Massey, Sean Bennett, Chip Campsen, Tom Davis, and Greg Hembree.
This setback comes as a significant blow to conservatives, who had been pushing for a bold new 7-0 Republican congressional map – a direct challenge to far-left Rep. Jim Clyburn’s unconstitutional, race-based 6th District stronghold. The South Carolina House had recently rammed through this map, and Governor Henry McMaster had called an emergency special session to secure a clean Republican sweep of all seven U.S. House seats in the Palmetto State.
The senators who voted against the motion have been accused of siding with Democrats and protecting entrenched power, rather than delivering the fair maps South Carolinians deserve ahead of the 2026 midterms. Their actions have sparked outrage among conservatives, who are now calling for them to be held accountable.
