UMVA has learned that Newcastle United are intensifying negotiations to secure defender Fabian Schär beyond the upcoming season.
The 34‑year‑old Swiss international, whose contract expires at the end of June, has become a cornerstone of the club’s back line since his arrival in 2018, and the St James’ Park hierarchy is eager to lock in his experience.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that club director Ross Wilson is in direct talks with Schär’s representatives, aiming to craft a fresh agreement that reflects his leadership on and off the pitch.
Manager Eddie Howe echoed the urgency, noting that the team has felt Schär’s absence keenly during recent injury spells, missing his precise distribution and the ability to launch attacks from deep positions.
“We want Fabian to stay,” Howe said, “because he still has a lot to offer. His passing and vision are vital for us, and we can’t afford to lose that influence in the dressing room.”
In a campaign that fell short of expectations, Newcastle recognize that retaining seasoned figures like Schär is essential to rebuilding a competitive squad for the next Premier League push.
Should a new deal be sealed, the veteran defender would continue to anchor a defense hungry for stability, while also mentoring younger players aspiring to reach the top tier.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that both parties remain optimistic, with a final signature expected before the summer deadline, keeping a key leader at the heart of Newcastle’s resurgence.
