The tranquil beauty of an Oahu hiking trail became a scene of terror for Arielle Konig, who testified she believed her husband was attempting to end her life. During a birthday celebration meant to repair their marriage, a hike on the Pali Puka Trail turned into a brutal attack, leaving her fighting for survival.
Arielle Konig recounted to the court the horrifying moment her husband, anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, suddenly grabbed her arms and began forcing her towards a steep cliff edge. She vividly recalled his chilling words, laced with anger: “I’m so f------ sick of this s---,” as he pushed her towards the precipice.
Instinct took over as she threw herself to the ground, desperately clinging to any vegetation she could grasp, fighting against his relentless attempts to drag her closer to the edge. The situation escalated when she saw him produce a syringe, commanding her to “Hold still,” a command she defied by knocking the syringe away.
The attack then turned even more violent. Gerhardt Konig allegedly picked up a rock and began repeatedly striking Arielle in the head. She screamed, convinced he was trying to knock her unconscious so he could finish the job, to drag her over the cliff and silence her forever.
Her desperate cries for help pierced the peaceful landscape, a frantic plea for survival. Two hikers, alerted by her screams, stumbled upon the scene and immediately called 911, reporting a man attempting to kill a woman. Their arrival, she testified, was her salvation.
The presence of the hikers startled Gerhardt Konig, halting the attack and allowing Arielle to crawl to safety before he fled into the dense foliage. A massive manhunt ensued, culminating in his arrest later that evening by Honolulu police.
Arielle Konig endured as many as ten blows to the head with the rock, yet remarkably remained conscious throughout the ordeal. She later required hospitalization for severe scalp lacerations, scars of which she displayed to the jury as stark evidence of the attack.
Defense attorneys attempted to portray the incident as a heated argument that spiraled out of control, suggesting an “unplanned, unanticipated scuffle” stemming from an “emotional affair.” They even proposed Arielle Konig initiated the physical altercation, hitting her husband with the rock first.
Arielle Konig vehemently refuted this characterization, firmly stating to the court that it was an “attack,” not a scuffle. She described a deliberate and terrifying assault on her life, a desperate struggle for survival against someone she had vowed to love and cherish.
In the wake of the attack, Arielle Konig filed for divorce in May 2025, seeking sole custody of their two young children. Her husband remains in custody, his attempt to have the attempted murder indictment dismissed having been rejected by a judge.
Gerhardt Konig has been suspended from his position as an independent contractor at Maui Memorial Medical Center, his career and personal life shattered by the accusations and the harrowing events on that fateful birthday hike.
