Congressional Candidate Faces Scrutiny Over Response to Transparency Query

Congressional Candidate Faces Scrutiny Over Response to Transparency Query

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan is facing criticism for claiming he is waiting on outstanding paperwork to complete his tax disclosure forms. This response comes amid allegations from his opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens, that El-Sayed is trying to conceal his net worth until after the August 4 Democratic primary.

El-Sayed's statement appears to be an attempt to diffuse the allegations, but some critics argue it raises more questions. When asked about seeking an extension on his tax disclosure forms until August 13, El-Sayed replied that taxes can be complicated, citing his wife's family owning property abroad.

El-Sayed's financial disclosure report, filed in June 2025, lists several holdings, including a salary from Wayne County worth $278,900 and other assets valued between $580,000 and $1.7 million. The report also discloses a rental property in Bangalore, India, worth between $100,001 and $250,000, and another rental property in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Some observers find El-Sayed's responses confusing, given the existence of his 2025 filings. Critics argue that his explanation raises concerns about transparency and his allegiance to the United States. They question why El-Sayed did not release his tax returns before the primary, especially since he has promised to represent everyday Michigan voters against corporate interests.

Stevens accused El-Sayed of lacking candor during a debate, saying she is the only candidate who has released her tax returns. El-Sayed hinted that his net worth, combined with his wife's assets, may be around $1 million, but did not provide a clear answer.

El-Sayed has pledged to release his tax documents ahead of the primary, citing complicated finances as the reason for the delay. He has promised to provide the necessary information, but critics argue that this should have been done earlier to maintain transparency with voters.
