A brazen daylight attack at Fairview Mall in Toronto left a security guard injured and sparked a multi-jurisdictional manhunt for a suspect now identified as Kyle Douglas Prouse, 53, of Montreal.
The incident unfolded shortly after the mall opened Tuesday morning, with investigators believing Prouse entered with a clear intention: to rob a jewelry store. He specifically targeted a Michael Hill location, a store previously victimized by similar crimes.
As Prouse attempted to escape with stolen jewelry, he encountered a member of the mall’s security team. A confrontation ensued, culminating in the security guard being shot in the torso.
Police swiftly responded to the scene, finding the injured guard outside the jewelry store. He was initially rushed to the hospital in life-threatening condition, but his status was later upgraded to stable.
The suspect initially fled in a white construction-style van, leading officers on a brief pursuit before abandoning the vehicle a kilometer from the mall. He then continued his escape in a black Honda Accord.
This single act of violence quickly unraveled a string of connected crimes stretching across Ontario. Prouse is now also a suspect in a jewelry store heist east of Toronto, and a vehicle theft in Pickering, dating back to August 2023.
Durham Regional Police have linked Prouse to a break-in at an Oshawa jewelry store, where over $235,000 worth of goods were stolen. The stolen vehicle from Pickering was allegedly used in the commission of that theft.
Investigators have released photos of Prouse, noting his connections to both Toronto and Vancouver. He was last seen wearing a grey hoodie and pants, a blue baseball cap, and a white medical mask, with distinctive flecks of white paint on his clothing and black shoes.
Authorities believe Prouse acted alone in the Fairview Mall shooting and subsequent thefts. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to pursue leads and gather information.
The Michael Hill jewelry store has been targeted by smash-and-grab thefts before, including an incident in October 2025, highlighting a concerning pattern of criminal activity.
