Senator Elizabeth Warren faced scrutiny for her enthusiastic endorsement of a Maine Senate candidate, Graham Platner, despite a deeply troubling element of his past. Platner, an oyster farmer seeking the Democratic nomination, had previously displayed a chest tattoo bearing a symbol disturbingly similar to one associated with the Nazi SS.
Warren publicly hailed Platner as “the real deal,” praising his willingness to “fight for what is right” and noting the excitement surrounding his campaign. This endorsement arrived after Platner claimed ignorance of the symbol’s meaning and subsequently had the tattoo removed, offering an apology for any offense caused.
The situation ignited controversy, particularly given Warren’s past reactions to displays of religious symbolism. She had previously questioned the loyalty of a nominee for Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, over his Christian tattoos, suggesting they raised concerns about potential disloyalty.
During Hegseth’s confirmation process, Warren referenced a report detailing his temporary removal from National Guard duty during a presidential inauguration. A supervisor, seemingly influenced by Hegseth’s tattoos – a Jerusalem Cross and the phrase “Deus Vult” – had expressed concerns about him being an “insider threat.”
Warren’s detailed concerns about Hegseth’s tattoos, articulated in a lengthy letter, contrasted sharply with her response to Platner’s situation. She minimized the controversy, stating he had apologized and was actively engaging with voters.
The contrast hasn’t gone unnoticed, fueling accusations of hypocrisy. Platner’s past is under intense examination, extending beyond the tattoo. A new attack ad launched by his primary opponent, Governor Janet Mills, highlights the tattoo and resurfaced controversial comments he made over a decade ago on Reddit.
The ad features disturbing comments Platner made regarding sexual assault, including a statement suggesting individuals concerned about rape should avoid becoming intoxicated. The ad includes responses from four women who found the comments “disgusting” and “disqualifying.”
Platner issued a video apology for the Reddit posts after they gained attention last fall. However, the damage may already be done, as the ad is being heavily circulated and funded with a significant six-figure investment by the Mills campaign.
Despite the controversies, recent polls suggest Platner has been gaining momentum, even holding a substantial lead over Mills heading into the primary election. The race is considered crucial for Democrats, who see Senator Susan Collins as vulnerable in the left-leaning state of Maine.
The stakes are high, with Democrats aiming to regain control of the Senate. This primary battle, now intensely focused on Platner’s past, will determine who will challenge Collins and potentially shift the balance of power in Washington.
