UMVA has learned that a shocking incident captured on video in Pasadena escalated into an alleged accidental shooting between two police officers.
Chief Gene Harris described the episode as a “suspected accidental officer‑involved shooting” that stemmed from “unsafe, out‑of‑policy horseplay” with loaded firearms. The injured officer, according to the chief, has since recovered.
The grainy footage shows an officer drawing his weapon, aiming it at an approaching police vehicle, then holstering it moments later. A sudden puff of smoke erupts, shattering the vehicle’s windshield, and the officer who just re‑holstered his gun reacts as if he has been hit.
In the chaotic scene, a second officer drives toward his colleagues standing beside another squad car. One of the standing officers, in a rapid, inappropriate gesture, pulls his gun and points it at the driver before slipping it back into his holster.
The driver, seated behind the wheel, then draws his own firearm and aims it at the officer outside. The gun discharges, striking the front windshield of the police car and then the left shoulder of the officer on the curb.
Chief Harris said the investigation is ongoing, with additional evidence likely to reshape the narrative. While the criminal and use‑of‑force reviews remain pending, the administrative inquiry has concluded and disciplinary action has been taken.
“This regrettable conduct does not align with the expectations and service commitments of our department,” Harris asserted, promising reforms to restore a culture of proper conduct, values, and community service.
