Sam Neill, Jurassic Park actor, dies at 78, months after being declared cancer-free

Beloved actor Sam Neill has passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy of iconic film roles and a devoted fan base.

Neill's 'unexpected' death comes just months after he shared that he was 'cancer-free' following his blood cancer diagnosis in 2022. His family released a statement on social media, revealing that he was surrounded by loved ones when he passed away on Monday, July 13th, in Sydney, Australia.

The family expressed their 'deepest gratitude' to the staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for providing Neill with 'incredible care' during his treatment. However, they did not confirm the cause of his death, stating only that it was 'sudden and unexpected.'

Neill had been open about his cancer diagnosis, sharing his experiences with fans and advocating for a CAR T-cell therapy clinical trial, which he credited with saving his life. The treatment, which costs around $540,000 AUD (£280k), genetically modifies a person's own T-cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells.

Neill was best known for his starring role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, a character he reprised in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion. He was also a versatile actor, with a wide range of film and television credits to his name, including My Brilliant Career, Attack Force Z, and Peaky Blinders.

Neill's family has asked for respect and privacy during this difficult time, but fans and friends have been paying tribute to the actor, calling him a 'legend' and praising his iconic performances on screen.

Neill's legacy extends beyond his film career, with a devoted family and numerous accolades to his name, including a knighthood in Australia and three Golden Globe nominations. He will be deeply missed by fans and the film industry alike.

Neill's final film roles, in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and The Last Resort, are set to be released posthumously in 2027, giving fans one last chance to see the beloved actor on the big screen.

Neill's passing has sent shockwaves through the film community, with fans and colleagues alike mourning the loss of a true screen legend.
