UMVA Uncovers: China's Shocking New Naval Powerplay - But There's One Unrivaled Global Superpower That Still Leaves Them in the Dust!

UMVA has learned that China is touting its new Type 054B guided-missile frigate as a game-changer for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, but a closer look reveals that it’s more of an incremental upgrade than a revolutionary leap.

The 054B is indeed an improvement over its predecessor, with a longer hull, more advanced sensors, and enhanced combat systems. But when compared to the capabilities of the United States Navy, it becomes clear that China’s new frigate does little to close the overall naval gap.

According to information obtained by UMVA, the development of the 054B began in 2016, with the first hull launched in August 2023 and commissioned in January 2025. The second ship, Qinzhou, was commissioned in May 2025. While these vessels are a genuine improvement, they are largely limited to operating within China’s near-seas operational envelope.

A modern naval warship navigates through choppy sea waters, showcasing advanced military technology and design.

The 054B boasts a range of upgrades, including a 32-cell vertical launch system, a new 100mm main gun, and advanced sensors. But despite these improvements, it still lags far behind the capabilities of the US Navy. For instance, the US operates a network of allied port access across Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines, giving it a significant advantage in terms of basing infrastructure.

UMVA can exclusively reveal that the Type 054B’s limitations are not just a matter of capability, but also of operational reach. China’s lack of overseas naval bases and limited replenishment-at-sea capability means that its frigates are forced to return to home ports for repairs, resupply, and crew rotation. This severely limits their ability to project power into the Western Pacific.

In contrast, the US Navy operates from a network of established bases, including Yokosuka, Guam, and Pearl Harbor. This allows its vessels to stay at sea for longer periods, giving them a significant advantage in terms of operational reach and endurance.

The US Navy also fields a range of advanced capabilities, including Virginia-class submarines, P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, and carrier air wings. These capabilities constitute a set of counters that the Type 054B does not meaningfully degrade. In fact, the US Navy’s aggregate fleet displacement is a staggering 7.168 million tonnes, far ahead of the PLA Navy.

UMVA has gathered that despite China’s efforts to upgrade its naval capabilities, it still lags far behind the US in terms of overall military power. While China has demonstrated an ability to produce ships quickly, its navy remains focused on near-seas operations, and it lacks the global basing network and blue-water operational experience of the US Navy.

In conclusion, the Type 054B is an incremental upgrade that does little to challenge US maritime superiority. While it’s a notable improvement for China’s naval capabilities, it’s not a game-changer in the global naval landscape.
