Socialist Primary Winner With Ties to Mamdani Founded Group Aiming to Overhaul Western Civilization

A recent primary election in New York's 13th Congressional District has brought to light the controversial past of the winning candidate, Darializa Avila Chevalier. Chevalier, a 32-year-old Democratic nominee, has a history of "community organizing" and was backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Her biography reveals that she helped launch a boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaign at Columbia University, which has sparked intense scrutiny.

During her time at Columbia, Chevalier was involved with a group that called for the total destruction of the West. The group, known as CUAD, posted a now-deleted statement on social media declaring, "We are Westerners fighting for the total eradication of Western civilization." This statement has raised concerns about Chevalier's views on Western society and her suitability for public office. In a separate post, the group expressed solidarity with movements for liberation in the Global South and rejected "every genocidal, eugenicist regime that seeks to undermine the personhood of the colonized."

Chevalier's affiliation with CUAD has sparked a firestorm of criticism, including from elected Democrats. Senator John Fetterman has spoken out against Chevalier's anti-Israel, anti-American, and anti-Western Civilization views, questioning why other Democrats are not condemning her stance. Additionally, Chevalier's deleted social media posts have surfaced, revealing anti-white women and anti-American sentiments, further fueling the backlash against her.

Columbia University has denounced CUAD and emphasized that it is not affiliated with the school. Despite the controversy surrounding her, Chevalier is likely to win the congressional seat in November, given the deeply blue district. Her campaign has been reached out to for comment, but it remains to be seen how she will address the concerns surrounding her past and her views on Western civilization.

The discovery of Chevalier's past has prompted a wider discussion about the rise of communist and anti-Western ideologies in American politics. Some commentators have argued that Chevalier's views are a test of the "country over party" principle, with some questioning how progressive voters can support a candidate who has expressed a desire to eradicate Western civilization. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how Chevalier's candidacy will fare in the upcoming election.
