US Raises Travel Alert for Quake-Struck Nation, Citing Disaster

Officials urge Americans to reconsider travel to Venezuela, citing new risks that include recent seismic activity. The nation remains classified under a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory, reflecting ongoing security and health concerns. The advisory highlights the need for travelers to exercise caution amid these challenges.

A June 27 update notes that a 7.2 foreshock followed by a 7.5 earthquake on June 24 caused extensive damage and disrupted transportation, infrastructure, and emergency services. These events added to the list of hazards for visitors. The earthquakes intensified the advisory’s warning about the country’s safety conditions.

Travelers are cautioned about crime, kidnapping, terrorism, and inadequate health infrastructure. Violent incidents such as homicide, armed robbery, and kidnapping are reported, though reliable statistics are lacking. The uncertainty surrounding crime rates further elevates the risk for visitors.

Areas identified as particularly high risk include the Venezuela‑Colombia border, Amazonas, Apure, Aragua, Guárico, Táchira, and rural parts of Bolívar. While the country is not a major tourist destination, some Americans still visit for family ties or natural attractions such as Angel Falls and Los Roques National Park. These regions remain outside major tourist hubs but are still frequented by travelers.

The advisory reflects a complex relationship between the United States and Venezuela, noting U.S. disaster relief efforts following the earthquakes. Officials say the response was welcomed by Venezuelan authorities and complied with interim governance. The assistance is described as unprecedented in the context of the recent seismic events.

The government has taken steps to aid the affected population after the deadly earthquakes. The support is framed as a significant effort to address the crisis caused by the seismic activity.
