Hiker Dies After Alligator Severes Arm During River Swim

A 31-year-old woman died following a fatal alligator attack while hiking in Florida, sparking an outpouring of grief from family and friends. Brittany Clark was described as an “amazing” and compassionate individual who loved the outdoors and adventure.

Clark and her boyfriend, Chance Allison, along with her best friend, were wading in the Econlockhatchee River to cool off during a hike when the attack occurred. The water was approximately chest-deep when an alligator struck, severing one of her arms and gravely injuring the other. Emergency personnel arrived to find Clark in critical condition.

Her boyfriend immediately called 911, reporting the extent of her injuries during the 911 call. “Both her arms, both her arms, both her arms are off, like, basically,” he told the operator. A second description confirmed one arm was nearly detached while the other was completely lost. The couple and their friend transported Clark to safety amid the emergency response.

Clark was pronounced dead before reaching the hospital. Her boyfriend described the tragedy as unfathomable, emphasizing her kindness and love for outdoor activities. “She didn’t deserve to go out in such a way,” he said. Clark frequently engaged in water activities, often swimming whenever possible.

Experts noted that the incident occurred during alligator mating season, a period when the animals are more aggressive. A medical examiner’s report detailed that the gator initiated a “death roll” after biting Clark’s arm, dragging her and her boyfriend underwater during the struggle.

Clark’s brother, Nick, shared memories of his sister’s generosity and warm personality. “She was an amazing person; she was nice and helpful with anyone who needed any kind of help,” he said. Clark, a native of Orlando, enjoyed wakeboarding, dirt biking, and exploring Florida’s natural landscapes.

Following the attack, authorities culled two alligators in the area for testing to determine if they were involved in the incident. The findings will be analyzed to assess their connection to the tragedy. The case underscores the risks of wildlife encounters in regions with high alligator populations.
