UMVA has learned that a stunning upset has shaken up Iowa's GOP gubernatorial primary, as Republican Zach Lahn emerged victorious over Trump-backed Rep. Randy Feenstra.
Lahn, a farmer and businessman who championed an "Iowa First" message, pulled off a surprising win over Feenstra, a well-known Republican and representative of Iowa's 4th Congressional District. This upset marks a significant setback for Feenstra, who had a strong congressional profile, a fundraising advantage, and support from prominent Iowa Republicans.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Lahn's campaign resonated with voters, allowing him to surpass Feenstra and other candidates, including former state Rep. Brad Sherman, former Iowa Department of Administrative Services Director Adam Steen, and state Rep. Eddie Andrews. Lahn's victory sets him up for a showdown with Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand in the general election.
Feenstra's concession speech revealed his gracious side, as he called Lahn to offer his congratulations and vowed to support him in the general election. "I just called Zach Lahn, and said, ‘Hey, you got to carry this torch. We got to keep this state red. You got to make sure you beat Rob Sand,'" Feenstra said, demonstrating his commitment to party loyalty.
Despite receiving a late endorsement from President Donald Trump, who called Feenstra "MAGA all the way," Lahn's outsider campaign and "Iowa First" agenda clearly struck a chord with voters. Lahn's support from MAHA Action, a group aligned with the Make America Healthy Again movement, also played a significant role in his victory.
The general election matchup between Lahn and Sand is expected to be highly competitive, with early ratings suggesting a tight contest. If Sand wins in November, he would become the first Democrat elected governor of Iowa since 2006, marking a significant shift in the state's politics.
