The attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, was not a random act of violence. Federal authorities have now definitively labeled it terrorism, a calculated strike fueled by the ideology of Hezbollah, a notorious Iran-backed terror group.
Jennifer Runyan, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit FBI, revealed this chilling assessment during a recent press conference. The ramming attack on March 12th, targeting the largest Jewish temple in Michigan, was a deliberate act intended to instill fear and inflict harm upon the Jewish community.
Runyan emphasized the gravity of this determination, stating the FBI doesn’t apply the label of “terrorism” lightly. A meticulous review of evidence revealed the attacker was demonstrably motivated and inspired by Hezbollah’s extremist beliefs and violent agenda.
The investigation uncovered a disturbing pattern of radicalization. While the immediate planning for the attack began on March 9th, a deeper dive into the assailant’s online activity revealed a consistent consumption of pro-Hezbollah and Iranian news sources dating back to January 2026.
This digital trail showcased a preoccupation with Hezbollah’s leadership, specifically the current Secretary General, Na’im Qassem, and coverage of an Iranian religious decree calling for a full-scale jihad against the U.S. military. The attacker was actively immersing himself in extremist propaganda.
The perpetrator has been identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old Lebanese national. He initially entered the United States in 2011 through a family-based immigration visa, becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2016.
Ghazali’s attack was meticulously planned and brutally executed. He deliberately drove a pickup truck laden with gasoline, fireworks, and explosives into Temple Israel, initiating a violent confrontation with security personnel before ultimately taking his own life as the vehicle ignited.
Adding another layer of complexity to this case, Ghazali’s brother, Ibrahim Muhammad Ghazali, was a known Hezbollah commander. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike just days prior to the attack on the synagogue, a fact that investigators are exploring for potential connections to the timing and motivation.
