Canada's police forces are facing a growing threat as the number of guns seized by law enforcement agencies continues to rise. In the month of June alone, six officers have been shot or fired upon, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and stricter gun control measures.
According to Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Marc Andrew, the recent seizure of an illegal handgun during a traffic stop is a stark reminder of the dangers that police officers face every day. The gun, which was loaded and contained ammunition, was seized by investigators from Road Safety Services and 22 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau after a traffic stop on June 21.
The individual responsible for the gun, Michael Lawrence, 37, of Toronto, has been charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, and other related charges. This incident is just one example of the many guns that are seized by police every week, with an average of at least two illegal guns seized per week in Peel Region.
The recent shooting of a Peel officer by Isaiah Bachoo, 24, of Brampton, who was on multiple court-ordered firearms prohibitions, highlights the need for stricter gun control measures. Bachoo was charged with discharging a firearm with intent and possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, among other charges.
Peel Chief Nishan Duraiappah emphasized the dangers that police officers face every day, stating that this incident is another stark reminder of the cycle of violent crime that continues to impact communities. He advocated for stronger bail and sentencing to better manage repeat violent offenders and reduce the risk they pose to communities.
As the number of guns seized by police continues to rise, it is clear that there is a pressing need for increased gun control measures to keep communities safe. The recent shooting of police officers in June is a stark reminder of the dangers that they face, and the importance of taking action to prevent such incidents in the future.
