A call to aggressively target federal law enforcement officers has ignited controversy, stemming from comments made by Minnesota’s Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. During a recent interview, Flanagan didn’t simply advocate for policy changes – she demanded the dismantling and prosecution of individuals working within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Flanagan’s words were stark: she asserted a need for those in power to “rip ICE apart” and actively pursue legal action against its agents. This wasn’t a spontaneous remark; she’d previously used the same forceful language following a tragic incident involving a Minnesota woman and an ICE operation.
The Lieutenant Governor’s stance reflects a deeply held conviction regarding the agency’s presence in Minnesota. She has consistently argued for a “complete and total overhaul” of ICE, going so far as to call for its complete removal from the state, demanding they “repair and restore what they have broken.”
Beyond her criticisms of ICE, Flanagan has also focused on outreach to specific communities within Minnesota. In a recent appearance on Somali television, she emphasized the integral role of the Somali community within the state, particularly in the wake of a widely reported fraud scandal that garnered national attention.
During that televised address, Flanagan was seen wearing a hijab, a gesture interpreted by some as a demonstration of solidarity with the Somali community. She affirmed their importance, stating they are “part of the fabric of the state of Minnesota,” even as the fraud case continued to unfold.
Flanagan is currently a candidate in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Minnesota, adding another layer of scrutiny to her outspoken views and the potential implications of her call for aggressive action against a federal agency.
