A brazen act of deception unfolded last month at a Scarborough bank, leaving a senior citizen victimized by a cunning pair. Investigators are now seeking the public’s help to identify the man and woman responsible for the calculated theft.
On April 15th, around 2:20 p.m., the suspects targeted an elderly man at the Eglinton Square Shopping Centre bank. They meticulously followed him inside, observing as he withdrew an undisclosed amount of money.
The scheme was shockingly simple, yet effective. As the victim exited the bank, the man deliberately squirted ketchup onto his back, creating a chaotic distraction.
While the senior citizen was understandably flustered, attempting to clean the mess, the woman swiftly approached, offering assistance. This seemingly helpful gesture was a calculated move to conceal their true intentions.
Under the guise of helping, the pair stole the victim’s money and quickly disappeared from the scene. Security footage captured the entire incident, providing investigators with crucial images of the suspects.
The male suspect is described as having a heavy build and a short beard, and was wearing glasses, a black jacket, black pants, and light-colored shoes. He presented himself as an unassuming bystander.
His accomplice, the female suspect, is of a slim build with dark hair pulled back in a ponytail. She wore a light-colored coat, a scarf, and carried a dark knapsack, completing her deceptive disguise with white shoes.
Police believe this incident may not be isolated, suggesting the possibility of other, unreported victims. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any similar suspicious activity.
Anyone with information regarding this theft is encouraged to contact the Toronto Police at 416-808-4100. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
