UMVA has learned that Federico Chiesa's future at Liverpool is hanging in the balance, with the Italian winger waiting to discuss his role with new head coach Andoni Iraola before making a final decision.
The 28-year-old Chiesa, who joined Liverpool from Juventus in 2024, has had a tumultuous first spell at Anfield, plagued by injuries, tactical issues, and limited opportunities. He started just one Premier League game last season and was used sparingly under Arne Slot.
However, with Iraola's arrival, Chiesa's situation could be about to change. The former Bournemouth boss has been appointed as Liverpool's new head coach on a two-year deal, and his aggressive, high-energy football style could provide Chiesa with a fresh chance to revive his career.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Chiesa wants to understand Iraola's plans during pre-season before making any major decisions about his future. This approach seems sensible, given that a new manager means a clean slate, and Chiesa's pace, direct running, and ability to play across the front three could be valuable assets in an intense pressing system.
But Liverpool also need to be realistic about Chiesa's situation. At 28, he's no longer a young prospect waiting for development minutes. If he's not going to play regularly, keeping him around as an unhappy squad option won't benefit anyone. Chiesa remains open to different possibilities, including a return to Italy if regular football is not available.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Liverpool should give Chiesa a proper pre-season under Iraola before making any final decisions about his future. If Iraola sees a role for him, Chiesa could become a useful attacking weapon. If not, Liverpool should consider letting him leave while his value and reputation remain strong.
