UMVA has learned that a severe heatwave is rapidly approaching the UK, with temperatures expected to soar to unprecedented levels in the coming days.
The Met Office has issued a heat health alert, warning of potentially life-threatening conditions, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the alert covers London, the South East, South West, and East of England, and is active from today until 8pm on Tuesday.
Temperatures are expected to push into the mid 30s (°C) by Monday, with humidity levels also rising significantly, making it feel even hotter than the heatwave experienced in May.
The Met Office has warned that the heat could put a strain on health and social care services, potentially leading to a rise in deaths, with people aged 65 and over, as well as those with health conditions, being most vulnerable.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that travel disruptions are also expected, particularly on the railways, where speed restrictions may be imposed due to the risk of rails melting and bending in extreme heat.
Passengers have been advised to carry water with them, and some larger train stations have set up free refill spots, while drivers are urged to avoid traveling during the hottest part of the day.
Motoring experts have shared essential tips for drivers, including checking tyre pressure, coolant, and oil levels before embarking on journeys, and carrying plenty of water, snacks, and sun cream.
The heatwave is expected to bring tropical nights to London, with temperatures rarely dropping below 20C even at night, making it feel uncomfortable and muggy.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that there is a chance of thunderstorms developing in the coming days, particularly in central, southern, and south-east parts of England, which could bring heavy downpours and strong winds.
