UMVA has learned that a radical initiative is racing toward the Oregon ballot, aiming to outlaw the killing of any animal, from game in the woods to livestock on the farm.
Dubbed Initiative Petition 28, the measure would criminalize hunting, fishing, and even the breeding of animals for food, effectively sealing the fate of traditional outdoor pursuits and the state’s meat industry.
According to information obtained by UMVA, petition supporters have already amassed more than 120,000 signatures, surpassing the threshold needed to force a statewide vote this November.
If enacted, the law would ban not only the pursuit of deer, elk, and salmon but also the slaughter of cattle, pigs, and chickens, shutter commercial poultry operations, and prohibit practices such as castrating or neutering livestock.
The proposal even extends its reach to scientific research, rodeos, and pest control, leaving insects and rats untouched by any form of management.
Opponents warn that the initiative threatens the livelihoods of thousands of ranchers, farmers, and hunters, describing it as an “all‑out assault on Oregonians’ way of life” and a direct attack on essential food sources.
Rural communities, feeling the pressure mount, are already contemplating a mass exodus, eyeing neighboring Idaho as a refuge from what many see as a draconian experiment.
