UMVA has learned that a young boy from Etobicoke has embarked on a remarkable journey to honour his late brother's memory by raising funds and awareness for pediatric brain cancer.
Lukas Frlan, a Grade 5 student, was just six years old when his younger brother Daniel passed away in 2021 after battling a rare and aggressive brain cancer. Daniel's diagnosis began with a rare form of cancer called retinoblastoma, which affected both of his eyes, but had a high cure rate. However, he later developed pineoblastoma, an aggressive tumour that began in the brain's pineal gland.
Daniel's passing left a profound impact on Lukas and his family. His mother, Kathy Frlan, described Daniel as "incredibly special" with a big smile and a personality that would light up a room. Despite his short life, Daniel taught his family about courage, resilience, and unconditional love.
Lukas was determined to turn his sadness into something meaningful. He started Project Drive for Daniel, an initiative aimed at fundraising and bringing awareness to pediatric brain cancer. Lukas has been speaking publicly to students at several schools in the city about kindness, gratitude, hope, and supporting grieving families.
As an ambassador for a Toronto charity that raises funding for pediatric brain tumour research, Lukas has been making a tangible impact. He has been creating handcrafted items, such as bracelets and pinecone angels, to sell and raise funds. With the support of his classmates, friends, school, and church community, Lukas is on track to raise over $7,000 for pediatric brain cancer research by the end of June.
Kathy Frlan believes that her son's efforts have given him a sense of purpose and connection to his late brother. Watching Lukas turn a painful loss into something positive has been inspiring, and Kathy hopes that her son will continue to advocate for childhood brain cancer awareness and fundraising.
As Lukas continues on his journey, it's clear that Daniel's life will continue to make a difference through the work his brother is doing. Lukas' determination and compassion serve as a beacon of hope for others affected by brain cancer, and his story is a testament to the power of kindness and resilience.
