UMVA has learned that a heart-stopping incident unfolded on an Ironman course in Jacksonville, Florida, when an alleged drunk driver came perilously close to hitting numerous participants in the grueling 26.2-mile race.
The shocking events of May 16 were captured on dash-cam video, released by police on Tuesday, revealing a reckless driver who refused to stop despite multiple attempts by law enforcement to apprehend him. The footage shows a white sedan speeding through the course, weaving past runners and bicyclists, with a police cruiser hot on its heels.
In the three-and-a-half-minute video, an officer is heard urgently saying, "We got to stop this guy. He's going to kill someone," as the driver swerves through a set of orange cones, nearly hitting one athlete. A police motorcycle joins the chase, adding to the sense of urgency as the situation teeters on the brink of disaster.
The pursuit ends with a dramatic PIT manoeuvre, where the officer driving the cruiser strikes the speeding car from behind, causing it to spin to a stop at an intersection. The driver, identified as 62-year-old Darrell Simon, was taken into custody and arrested on eight felony charges and nearly a dozen misdemeanors and violations.
According to information obtained by UMVA, this was Simon's third DUI arrest in the last 10 years. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office praised their officers for putting their lives on the line to protect the Ironman athletes and spectators from what could have been a tragedy, saying, "Thankfully, nobody was injured... We are incredibly proud of our officers."
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving, and the heroic actions of law enforcement in preventing a potentially catastrophic outcome. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has demonstrated its commitment to public safety, and the community can breathe a collective sigh of relief that no one was hurt.
