Tensions flared in Toronto on Saturday as a demonstration in support of Palestine outside the U.S. Consulate became the site of two separate, disturbing incidents leading to arrests.
The Al-Quds Day rally, drawing thousands, was met by counter-demonstrators, creating a volatile atmosphere. The first incident involved a physical altercation where a man participating in the counter-demonstration allegedly attacked someone holding an Iranian flag, breaking the flag’s pole and striking the individual in the head with fragments.
Farshid McVandifar, 56, now faces charges of mischief and assault related to this confrontation. Investigators allege a deliberate act of aggression that escalated quickly into violence.
In a separate and equally troubling event, another counter-demonstrator allegedly targeted a participant wearing an Iranian flag on their back. The suspect is accused of spitting on the individual and forcibly ripping the flag away.
The situation didn’t end there. Police allege the same suspect then ignited an Iranian flag and brazenly wore flags attached to the soles of their shoes, a deeply provocative act. Mostafa Shabanian Bashmandoost, 39, was arrested and faces multiple charges, including assault, criminal harassment, and inciting hatred.
Authorities are investigating both incidents as potential hate-motivated offences, signaling the seriousness with which these actions are being viewed. The investigations are ongoing, seeking to understand the full extent of the motivations behind these acts.
Meanwhile, in Mississauga, a brazen hotel robbery left one man injured. On March 7th, three suspects allegedly held up a man at gunpoint inside a hotel near Hurontario and Derry Road, fleeing the scene with stolen property.
Police recovered a firearm after executing a search warrant at the hotel. Abdoulkader Abdi, 33, was arrested and charged with a string of offences, including robbery and multiple firearm-related charges. The victim sustained minor injuries during the ordeal.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Kimberly MacIntryre, 28, described as white, 5’5”, 120 pounds, with long brown hair and a distinctive birthmark on her nose. She was last seen wearing a black winter coat with fur trim and is wanted for robbery.
Investigators are also seeking to identify a third suspect: a male, approximately 20-25 years old, with a light complexion and slim build, last seen in a black puffer jacket, blue tracksuit, grey running shoes, and a black balaclava. The search continues for this individual.
In a separate incident, a person-with-a-gun call led Toronto police to a 29-year-old man now facing a multitude of firearms charges. Officers responded to a report near Warden and Ellesmere Road on Friday afternoon.
The suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at two victims before fleeing in a vehicle, which was later discovered abandoned. A search of the vehicle revealed 9mm cartridges, escalating the investigation.
Olivier Brunot-Nsoga was apprehended with the assistance of Durham Regional Police in Pickering. During his arrest, two additional firearms were seized, one equipped with an extended magazine containing 27 rounds. Further searches uncovered a third firearm.
Brunot-Nsoga is now charged with a comprehensive list of offences, including uttering threats, assault with a weapon, and numerous firearm-related violations. The case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat illegal gun activity in the city.
