A chilling scene unfolded at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, leaving two Air Canada pilots dead and dozens injured after a catastrophic collision with a firetruck on the tarmac.
The pilots have been identified as Antoine Forest, from Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, and MacKenzie Gunther – both described as being early in their promising aviation careers. The impact was devastating, instantly claiming their lives.
Investigators have recovered both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, crucial pieces of the puzzle in determining the cause of the tragedy. Remarkably, the recorders sustained no damage in the crash.
Early analysis is already underway, and officials anticipate releasing key findings soon. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) described the crash site as “expansive,” hinting at the force of the impact and the complexity of the investigation.
The harrowing moments leading up to the collision were captured in air traffic control transmissions. A desperate plea, “Stop, Truck 1. Stop,” echoed through the speakers, followed by repeated commands to another aircraft to halt.
Dozens of passengers aboard the Air Canada plane sustained injuries in the chaos. Adding to the tragedy, at least two Port Authority firefighters in the truck suffered serious injuries while responding to a separate incident.
Against all odds, one Canadian flight attendant was ejected from the aircraft during the impact and miraculously survived. New footage of the crash depicts the Air Canada flight accelerating down the runway just moments before the collision.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy arrived at the scene to oversee the investigation, emphasizing the close collaboration between the Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB. Updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the aviation community, prompting a thorough examination of safety protocols and procedures at LaGuardia Airport and beyond.
