A critical issue emerged over the weekend, disrupting access to essential applications for Windows 11 users. Reports flooded in concerning login failures, impacting the functionality of core Microsoft services.
The problem, triggered by a recent update, specifically affects apps reliant on Microsoft accounts – Teams, OneDrive, Copilot, the Xbox app, and even the Microsoft Store itself. Users found themselves confronted with frustrating error messages, falsely claiming a lack of internet connectivity.
Microsoft acknowledged the widespread disruption, confirming the issue stemmed from update KB5079473 for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. The error often presented as a stark message: “You’ll need the Internet for this,” despite a stable connection being present.
The root cause wasn’t a genuine network problem, but a flaw in how Windows 11 was verifying internet access during the login process. Microsoft’s engineers immediately began investigating, promising a swift resolution.
Now, on March 23, 2026, that resolution has arrived. Microsoft released an emergency update – KB5085516 – specifically designed to correct the faulty internet connection detection during login.
The update is available now through Windows Update, appearing as an optional installation. Applying this patch should restore seamless access to affected applications.
While awaiting the official fix, resourceful users discovered a temporary workaround: a simple restart of the computer while actively connected to the internet. This often, though not always, resolved the login issue.
However, Microsoft cautioned against a specific action during the restart process. Disconnecting and reconnecting the internet mid-restart could inadvertently recreate the error, hindering the temporary fix.
The swift response from Microsoft underscores the importance of addressing these types of disruptions quickly, ensuring a smooth and reliable experience for Windows 11 users.
