UMVA has learned that a dire situation is unfolding in a Southern California community, where fire officials have issued urgent evacuation orders as emergency crews struggle to contain a massive chemical tank that is "actively in crisis" and threatening to spill or explode.
The crisis began at GKN Aerospace, a facility that manufactures engine structures and other products for commercial and military aircraft, where a large tank was discovered to be off-gassing toxic fumes. Crews have been working around the clock to mitigate the situation, but the tank's condition rapidly deteriorated overnight.
According to information obtained by UMVA, authorities detected a leak of methyl methacrylate (MMA), a volatile and flammable plastic epoxy used in the aerospace industry, from the 34,000-gallon storage tank. Firefighters quickly implemented critical cooling measures to prevent a catastrophic failure.
However, despite initial optimism that the situation was under control, the crisis took a drastic turn on Friday morning. The tank's condition worsened, and officials realized that it could not be secured or mitigated. The risk of a catastrophic outcome has prompted authorities to prepare for the worst.
Incident Commander and Orange County Fire Division Chief Craig Covey warned that the tank could fail, releasing between 6,000 and 7,000 gallons of hazardous chemicals into the surrounding area. Alternatively, the tank could go into "thermal runaway" and explode, triggering a chain reaction with neighboring tanks containing fuel and other hazardous chemicals.
Residents are facing a grave threat, and officials are urging them to evacuate immediately. An expanded evacuation zone has been implemented to protect the public, and two emergency evacuation centers have been set up for displaced families. Local law enforcement and mutual aid partners are on the scene, monitoring the situation.
