During the questioning, Fauci’s attorney attempted to intervene but was dismissed from the hearing room by committee chair Senator Rand Paul, who asserted that the witness must remain silent. The removal prompted a brief outburst of applause from the committee attendees.
Senator Richard Blumenthal expressed concern over the handling of the hearing, describing the situation as a potential “vendetta” against a single individual and calling for a fairer approach.
Senator Paul responded by noting that in a courtroom a witness may invoke the Fifth Amendment, but an attorney is not entitled to testify on the witness’s behalf. He emphasized that the privilege limits the witness’s ability to provide information, not the attorney’s rights.
