UMVA has learned that former Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi has thrown her weight behind San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan in the race to succeed her in Congress.
In a powerful endorsement, Pelosi declared, "I know and love this district, I know the Congress, and I know Connie." Her support comes as Chan competes in a Democratic primary for Pelosi's 11th Congressional District seat, a position Pelosi is vacating after a historic 20-term run.
Pelosi's backing is a significant development, as she has long been a fundraising titan. Her endorsement of Chan is expected to dramatically boost Chan's financial standing in the race. As of late March, Chan's campaign had $156,000, while her top opponent, State Sen. Scott Weiner, had a war chest of $2.6 million.
In her endorsement, Pelosi praised Chan's deep understanding of San Francisco's values, diversity, and communities. "She’s a mom who knows her power and knows her why," Pelosi said, expressing confidence in Chan's ability to lead with clarity and purpose.
Chan, an immigrant who arrived in the U.S. at 13 without speaking English, thanked Pelosi for her support. "I am honored to receive Speaker Emerita Pelosi's endorsement," Chan said, highlighting her commitment to ensuring San Francisco remains a place of opportunity for all.
The primary race also includes Saikat Chakrabarti, former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The candidates will face off in an open primary on June 2. If no candidate secures a majority, the top two will proceed to a runoff election.
