A wave of unsettling incidents has gripped the Greater Toronto Area, beginning with a deliberately set fire on the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus early Tuesday morning.
Police responded to reports of a vehicle engulfed in flames around 12:55 a.m., discovering it had sustained extensive damage. Thankfully, no one was injured in the arson.
Following the release of suspect images and a description, authorities swiftly announced an arrest on Wednesday. Omari Douglas, a 27-year-old Toronto resident, now faces serious charges including arson with disregard for human life and multiple breaches of probation.
Meanwhile, a separate investigation revealed a brazen string of robberies plaguing York Region. A single suspect allegedly committed seven robberies in just seven days, leaving communities on edge.
The most recent incident occurred at a Markham gas station near Bur Oak Ave. and McCowan Rd. just after midnight on Monday, where a man reportedly made threats and fled with cash.
A collaborative effort between York Regional Police and the Peel Regional Police Central Robbery Bureau led to the arrest of Andre Lawrence, a 35-year-old from Brampton. He is now facing a multitude of charges, including seven counts of robbery and seven counts of wearing a disguise.
The scope of Lawrence’s alleged crimes extends far beyond York Region, with investigators currently examining his potential involvement in at least nineteen additional robberies across the GTA.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Lawrence was already under an undertaking for a separate offense at the time of his arrest, and faces additional charges of dangerous driving and stunt driving.
These investigations remain active, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward, hoping to bring a sense of security back to the affected communities.
