Trump touts progress in Iran talks and success in Venezuela, says 'Cuba is next'

A surprising tone emerged from President Trump during a Florida appearance, hinting at a potential recalibration of foreign policy. Following developments with Iran and Venezuela, a new focus appeared to crystallize, unexpectedly naming Cuba as a future point of attention.

Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative Institute Summit, Trump acknowledged his long-held belief in “peace through strength,” but conceded the occasional necessity of forceful action. Then, almost as an afterthought, he declared, “Cuba is next,” immediately following with a plea to the media to disregard the remark – a curious contradiction that only amplified its impact.

The President expressed sharp criticism regarding NATO’s lack of involvement in recent negotiations with Iran, labeling their absence a “tremendous mistake.” He suggested the United States has shouldered a disproportionate financial burden for the alliance’s protection, questioning the continued necessity of that commitment.

Central to the discussions was the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil transport. Trump reiterated his demand for Iran to reopen the waterway, previously asserting the U.S. desire to maintain control over it, playfully anticipating media misinterpretations of his words.

Iran’s imposition of substantial fees on tankers navigating the Strait has created a significant point of contention. This choke point handles approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, making its unobstructed passage a matter of global economic security and a key focus of ongoing negotiations.

The President’s comments suggest a willingness to engage in dialogue with Iran, but firmly tied to the condition of unrestricted access through the Strait of Hormuz. This stance underscores the importance of this waterway in the broader geopolitical landscape and the potential for a shift in U.S. strategy.
