A chilling series of break-ins gripped Toronto residents over four months, culminating in the arrest of a 59-year-old man now facing a multitude of charges. The incidents, stretching from mid-January to just last week, left a trail of violated homes and a community on edge.
The first intrusion occurred in the early hours of January 15th, around 5:30 a.m., targeting an apartment building near Cosburn and Pape Avenues. The suspect allegedly forced his way inside, systematically targeting storage lockers and absconding with a significant number of personal belongings.
Later that same day, around 11:05 p.m., a residence in the Avenue Road and St. Clair Avenue West area was invaded. The suspect rummaged through the home, but was thankfully disturbed by the homeowner and fled empty-handed, a terrifying encounter narrowly avoided.
The pattern continued on January 25th, with another apartment building near Broadview and Danforth Avenues becoming a target. This time, the suspect entered a unit while the resident slept, awakening the occupant who bravely confronted and chased the intruder away, though some items were stolen.
March brought further incidents, including a break-in on Adelaide Street East and George Street, where two units were compromised, and money and personal items were stolen. The suspect demonstrated a disturbing persistence, repeatedly breaching security and invading private spaces.
Just last Thursday, another apartment building, this time near King Street East and Princess Street, was targeted. Once again, the suspect forced entry into a unit, but was startled when the resident awoke, forcing a hasty retreat without taking anything.
Mark Hardy is now facing a staggering 18 counts of break and enter, alongside two counts of theft under $5,000, four counts of possessing break-in instruments, and five counts of disguise with intent. He is described as 5-foot-10, approximately 200 pounds, with a medium build, bald head, and striking green eyes.
In a separate, deeply disturbing incident, Toronto police are investigating an early morning sexual assault that occurred near Church Street and The Esplanade on Sunday. A man approached a victim from behind, forcing them towards a secluded area before being interrupted by concerned passersby.
The suspect in the assault is described as a Black man, between 25 and 30 years old, approximately 5-foot-10 with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a green or grey jacket, a grey hooded sweater, dark baggy pants, dark Nike shoes, and a distinctive black Lacoste backpack with white lettering and a green alligator logo.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding either the break-ins or the sexual assault to come forward. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers.
