UMVA has learned that a significant overhaul of the disability tax credits application process is set to take effect, aiming to streamline procedures and reduce backlogs for Canadians.
As of July 14, individuals applying for the disability tax credit (DTC) will no longer be able to upload applications or supporting documents through the "submit documents" function on the Canada Revenue Agency's online portal. Instead, a new, dedicated online application form will be introduced for new DTC cases.
This change is designed to enhance the application process, allowing for quicker validation of information and faster processing times. The Canada Revenue Agency stated that it aims to provide Canadians with confidence and support when applying for the DTC.
The updated process promises to ensure that applications are kept up-to-date, reducing the likelihood of rejections due to missing information. It will also simplify the experience for both applicants and physicians, making it more efficient overall.
If additional information is required, the Canada Revenue Agency will contact applicants through their CRA account or via Canada Post. This move is part of a broader effort to modernize and improve the application process for the DTC, a non-refundable tax credit that provides relief to individuals with ongoing or permanent physical or mental impairments.
Applicants should note that paper versions of the required form, T2201, can still be submitted, but only the latest version (from 2023 onwards) will be accepted. Older versions, printed before 2023, will no longer be valid after September 8.
