Rashaad Muhammad’s life irrevocably changed within the walls of the Fulton County Jail. Arrested in August, his ordeal quickly descended into a harrowing battle for survival, culminating in the amputation of his fingers and lower legs – a devastating consequence, he and his attorneys claim, of shocking medical neglect.
Muhammad repeatedly pleaded for essential antibiotics and medical supplies, necessities he carried with him due to a pre-existing, chronic bladder condition that left him vulnerable to infection. Despite his urgent requests, jail medical staff allegedly ignored his pleas, a silence that would prove catastrophic.
Less than two weeks after his arrest, Muhammad’s condition spiraled. He could no longer stand, his body overwhelmed by infection. Rushed to a hospital, he faced a grim prognosis: amputation was the only way to save his life. Doctors presented him with a brutal choice – life over limbs.
“I’m not okay. Every day is a battle. It’s a struggle,” Muhammad stated, his voice heavy with pain and disbelief, during a press conference held outside the jail. Now reliant on a wheelchair, he confronts a future profoundly altered by the events within those walls.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Muhammad, described a meeting with the sheriff as a return to a living nightmare. He characterized the treatment Muhammad endured as “the very definition of deliberate indifference,” a violation of his constitutional rights.
The Fulton County Jail has long been plagued by issues, prompting a civil rights investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2023. The investigation uncovered appalling conditions – filthy, unsafe environments that systematically disregarded the rights of those incarcerated.
A court-enforceable consent decree was established a year ago, aiming to address the systemic failures. An independent monitor now regularly assesses the jail, documenting problems and tracking progress, but for Muhammad, the changes came too late.
Crump argues that the Fulton County Board of Commissioners shares responsibility, having been informed of the jail’s deficiencies yet failing to enact meaningful change. He advocates for a new jail facility, a proposal supported by the sheriff.
Recently, the board approved borrowing up to $1.3 billion for jail improvements, including a new facility and renovations to the existing structure. However, Crump believes this response is insufficient, particularly in light of Muhammad’s suffering.
Blame also extends to NaphCare, the jail’s medical provider, accused of negligence and indifference. Crump points to a previous death within the jail – a man who perished in a cell infested with bedbugs – as evidence of a pattern of inadequate care.
Muhammad’s meeting with the sheriff, while described as “productive,” left him feeling that it wasn’t enough. He and his legal team are demanding a full criminal investigation into the circumstances that led to his amputations.
His legal team is meticulously gathering evidence, exploring every available legal avenue to secure justice for Muhammad and hold those responsible accountable. The charges against Muhammad in connection with an August shooting were dropped while he was hospitalized.
The initial arrest stemmed from a 911 call Muhammad himself made following a shooting. Upon police arrival, he was taken into custody on aggravated assault and gun possession charges, immediately informing officers of his critical need for antibiotics and medical supplies left in his vehicle.
Cleared for jail intake at Grady Memorial Hospital, Muhammad continued to voice his medical needs to jail staff, his pleas repeatedly ignored. Fellow inmates, witnessing his deteriorating condition, also implored staff to intervene.
By August 22nd, Muhammad was in “severe medical distress” upon his return to the hospital. He subsequently fell into a coma, awakening weeks later to the devastating reality: his hands and legs were beyond saving, requiring amputation to preserve his life.
Months of hospitalization and multiple surgeries followed, a grueling ordeal that has left Muhammad forever scarred. His story serves as a stark and tragic illustration of the potential consequences of systemic failures within the justice system.
