Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government on Tuesday.
Justice Amy Coney Barrett detailed the chilling threats her family has faced following the Roe v. Wade draft opinion leak, a Supreme Court decision that was leaked to the public in May 2022.
"Roe was egregiously wrong from the start," a Supreme Court Justice wrote in the draft opinion, "We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people's elected representatives."
On Tuesday, Amy Coney Barrett revealed that her 12-year-old son discovered her bulletproof vest in her bedroom, prompting an explanation from her about the reasons for wearing such protection.
"I didn't expect that performing this service was going to put me in the position of explaining to my children what a bulletproof vest was and why I had to wear one," Amy Coney Barrett said, also expressing gratitude for Supreme Court police stationed outside her home.
In May, police responded to a call for 'suspicious noise' thought to be gunshots at the home of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, only to discover it was a swatting call after meeting with her security detail.
The swatting incident at Amy Coney Barrett's home is the latest assassination attempt against a conservative Supreme Court Justice, following a similar incident in June 2022, when a California man was arrested near the Maryland home of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
The would-be assassin, Nicholas John Roske of Simi Valley, California, reportedly told police he was there to kill Kavanaugh, citing his opposition to abortion and guns.
