During a recent interview, Representative Adam Smith voiced a growing concern within the Democratic Party regarding its approach to foreign policy. The Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee openly questioned the implications of the party seemingly aligning with adversaries like Iran.
When directly asked if the Democratic stance felt like taking Iran’s side, Smith vehemently rejected the framing of the question. He argued that opposing a war shouldn’t be equated with wanting the opposing side to win, dismissing the notion as a deliberately misleading tactic used to perpetuate conflict.
Smith clarified his position, stating that advocating against a full-scale invasion of Iran doesn’t signify a desire for America to lose. He challenged the logic of equating disagreement with military action to a lack of patriotism or a willingness to accept defeat.
However, he admitted to genuine worry about the direction his party was heading. Smith expressed concern that the Democratic platform was drifting away from a fundamental commitment to supporting the interests of the United States on the global stage.
He acknowledged the complicating rhetoric from former President Trump, who has questioned the very purpose of American involvement in international affairs. Smith contrasted this with what he described as dangerous and aggressive statements advocating for the destruction of Iranian civilization, regardless of civilian casualties.
Smith warned that such rhetoric risks transforming the United States into a predatory force on the world stage. He emphasized the need for balance, expressing his desire to prevent the Democratic Party from adopting an overly aggressive and destructive foreign policy.
Following earlier statements from Trump regarding Iran, Smith had previously condemned attacks as violations of both domestic and international law. He had also advocated for maintaining the previous nuclear deal negotiated under the Obama administration.
