UMVA has learned that former Liverpool striker Michael Owen is urging Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to recall Viktor Gyokeres for the Champions League final against Paris Saint‑Germain.
Arsenal, fresh from a league‑title triumph, stand on the brink of a historic double as they prepare to face PSG in their first European final in two decades. The French giants, defending champions, are slight favourites, but the Gunners have yet to taste defeat in this season’s competition.
Gyokeres has been a revelation in the knockout stages, netting a crucial goal in the first leg against Atlético Madrid in Madrid and then delivering a man‑of‑the‑match performance at the Emirates a week later. The 27‑year‑old’s sharp instincts and relentless work rate have turned him into a genuine threat up front.
Despite being relegated to the bench for Arsenal’s final league games against Burnley and Crystal Palace, Owen insists the Swede belongs in the starting XI on Saturday. “He has been in outstanding form, scoring and creating goals, and he can cause problems for PSG’s defence,” the former England international said.
Arsenal’s defence has already proven its mettle, but Owen believes a striker of Gyokeres’ calibre could tip the balance in a tightly contested final. “He leads the line brilliantly and is a real danger now,” he added.
The outcome of the final will write a new chapter in Arsenal’s history, but even a league title alone would end a 22‑year wait for top‑flight glory. Owen also warned against reckless spending in the upcoming transfer window.
“Arsenal have a superb squad that has already delivered a title and a Champions League final,” he explained. “They can keep their powder dry and only act if a truly special striker becomes available.”
