Supreme Court Justice Alito's Reported Retirement Sparks Confusion After News Outlet Issues Retraction

National Public Radio reported on Tuesday that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was retiring, citing a source within the Court.

According to the initial report, the Supreme Court made the announcement that Alito was stepping down, sparking widespread speculation about the implications for the Court's composition.

However, just 10 minutes later, the report was removed from the website, replaced with an editor's note stating that the story had been "published in error."

The editor's note read: "This story has been taken down. It was published in error."

In a subsequent statement, NPR staff acknowledged that the Alito article was "erroneously published," stating that the original report was retracted and retracting the statement that Alito was retiring.

The reversal came quickly, with NPR's statement reading: "Earlier today we erroneously published a story saying that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was retiring. He has not retired and we have retracted the story."
